Situated in the heart of Florence, the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore (also known as the Duomo of Florence) is the iconic symbol of Florence and the most famous of all Renaissance churches. Completed in 1436, the cathedral sits atop the city's Baptistery and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its architectural excellence. The creation of the cathedral was made possible due to the contributions of many local masters such as Giotto, Arnolfo di Cambio, Brunelleschi and Michelangelo. The exterior of the Duomo is composed of marble and showcases intricate figures, scenes and inscriptions, while the interior space is breath-taking with its brown marble pillars, ornate tabernacles and grand ceilings. The highlight of the cathedral remains its enormous cupola, giving visitors an unparalleled overview of Florence's skyline and the Tuscan countryside.
