Cathedral of Bern
📍 From Kirchenfeldbrücke, Switzerland
Bern Cathedral, known locally as the Berner Münster, is a Gothic church rising above the sandstone streets of Bern’s Old Town, close to the Aare River. Construction began in 1421, but its tower was not completed until 1893; at just over 100 metres, it is Switzerland’s tallest church tower and a defining feature of the city’s skyline. Originally Catholic, the cathedral became Reformed in 1528. Its main portal preserves an elaborate, brightly coloured Last Judgment scene, a striking contrast to the restrained interior shaped by the Reformation. Medieval stained glass in the choir adds another layer of colour and craftsmanship. Outside, the carved portal rewards close framing, while the tower’s vertical lines stand against the compact roofs of the Old Town. The adjoining Münsterplattform terrace places the cathedral beside an open panorama of the Aare and the neighbourhoods below.
