The Cathedral Basilica of Maria Santissima della Madia rises in Monopoli’s historic center, a short walk from the old harbor, and serves as the city’s principal Catholic church. The present building is an 18th-century Baroque reconstruction of an earlier Romanesque cathedral, with an elaborate pale-stone façade, a prominent bell tower and a richly decorated interior of polychrome marble, gilding and painted vaults. Its identity is closely tied to the revered icon of the Madonna della Madia, Monopoli’s patron; local tradition recounts that it reached the harbor on a raft whose timbers helped complete the medieval church roof. From Largo Cattedrale, the façade’s sculptural tiers and warm limestone stand out against the close-set white buildings of the old town.
