The Catedral y Palacio Municial de La Plata is an impressive example of neo-Gothic architecture. Located in the city of La Plata in the province of Buenos Aires, it was declared a National Historic Monument in 1941. The cathedral, which was begun in December 1884, was consecrated after 14 years in 1898. It is the largest and most important cathedral in Argentina and the fourth-largest in South America. The impressive Palacio Municial (Municipal Palace), opened in 1897, was built in the style of French chateaux. The city of La Plata was established in 1882 and these two structures represented the city’s wealth, power, and its influence in the region.
