The Metropolitan Cathedral of Our Lady of Aparecida stands near Brasília’s Monumental Axis, embodying the capital’s bold modernist identity. Designed by Oscar Niemeyer and inaugurated in 1970, its circular nave is framed by 16 curved concrete columns that rise like an open crown around a glass roof. Marianne Peretti’s blue, green and white stained glass filters daylight across the interior, while sculptures of angels by Alfredo Ceschiatti appear suspended above the congregation. The approach through a dim underground passage makes the luminous nave feel especially dramatic. Outside, the cathedral’s clean geometry, reflecting pool and statues of the Four Evangelists create strong symmetrical compositions, while wide-angle views emphasize the contrast between the low entrance and the soaring structure.
