The Catedral Metropolitana de São Sebastião, commonly known as the Rio de Janeiro Cathedral, is an iconic modern architectural marvel located in the heart of Centro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Constructed between 1964 and 1979, the cathedral was designed by architect Edgar de Oliveira da Fonseca and boasts a unique conical shape reminiscent of Mayan pyramids, symbolizing the proximity between the celestial and the terrestrial. The structure stands 75 meters tall with a diameter of 106 meters, accommodating up to 20,000 people. Its interior is adorned with stunning stained-glass windows that reach 64 meters in height, bathing the space in vibrant color. Visitors can explore a small religious art museum housed within. Conveniently accessible, the cathedral offers a serene retreat amid the bustling city.
