📍 From Plaza Civica, El Salvador
The Metropolitan Cathedral of San Salvador anchors Plaza Gerardo Barrios in the capital’s historic center and serves as the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese. Dedicated to the Divine Savior of the World, it is closely linked to El Salvador’s modern history: Saint Óscar Arnulfo Romero, the archbishop assassinated in 1980 after denouncing violence and injustice, is entombed in the crypt. His funeral at the cathedral became a tragic turning point when violence erupted around the crowded plaza. The building’s pale, symmetrical façade, twin bell towers and central dome form a commanding backdrop to the square, while the broad steps reveal the cathedral’s scale and civic prominence. From across the plaza, the composition can include the equestrian monument to President Gerardo Barrios, connecting religious architecture with the ceremonial heart of downtown.
