The Cathedral of San Cristóbal stands beside the central plazas of San Cristóbal de las Casas, anchoring the colonial core of this highland Chiapas city. Seat of the local Roman Catholic diocese and dedicated to Saint Christopher, it is best recognized by its broad Baroque façade: warm ochre and deep red surfaces are layered with white stucco ornament, niches, columns, and sculpted details. The intricate frontage contrasts with the open paving and everyday activity of the square, creating clear views of its symmetry and texture. Its religious role is also closely woven into the city’s complex cultural landscape, where Catholic traditions coexist with the living customs of surrounding Maya communities. As it remains an active place of worship, quiet behavior and discretion with photography are appropriate inside.
