The Catedral de Mallorca, or La Seu as it is known locally, is one of the most spectacular pieces of Gothic architecture in Spain. Located in the heart of Palma, it lies at the centre of the city and provides stunning views out over the Mediterranean. Its spires, towers, domes and ornate interior make it an awe inspiring sight.
The cathedral was built on the site of a mosque, which was constructed by Muslim rulers in the 13th century. After being conquered by the Christians, the old mosque was scrapped and replaced with the present cathedral building in the 14th century. The interior is opulently decorated, with stained glass windows and a beautiful array of chapels, sculptures and altarpieces. Also located in the cathedral complex is a museum, which houses a great collection of religious artefacts. The museum also hosts special temporary exhibitions throughout the year. The cathedral is open every day of the week and admission is free, though donations are welcome. Guided tours in various languages can also be booked online.
