Catedral de León, the Cathedral of the Assumption, faces the central plaza and anchors León’s colonial streetscape. Built across the 18th and early 19th centuries, its white façade and domes bring together Baroque and Neoclassical forms; the cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Inside is the tomb of Rubén Darío, Nicaragua’s celebrated poet. From the rooftop, rounded white vaults fill the foreground, with the city’s tiled roofs and, on clear days, volcanoes stretching into the distance.
