Catedral de la Asunción de Santa María is Lecce’s cathedral, anchoring the intimate, enclosed Piazza del Duomo at the heart of the old town. The building is a clear expression of Lecce Baroque: sculpted façades and rich ornament carved from local pietra leccese give the stone a warm, honeyed texture that catches light in dramatic relief. The campanile rises beside the church and, together with the adjoining bishop’s palace and cloistered façades, composes a compact ensemble of columns, statues and curving pediments.
