Granada Cathedral stands in the historic city center, beside the Royal Chapel and close to the Alcaicería, the former silk-market quarter. Begun in the 16th century on the site of the city’s main mosque, it marks the transformation of Granada after the end of Nasrid rule in 1492. Diego de Siloé shaped its Renaissance interior, where monumental white piers, high vaults and a circular main chapel create an unusually expansive sense of space. The Baroque main façade, designed by Alonso Cano, faces Plaza de las Pasiegas; its three great arches and sculptural decoration give the square a theatrical backdrop. Inside, pale stonework contrasts with gilded furnishings and stained glass, offering a very different visual character from the richly worked exterior. The adjoining Royal Chapel is a separate monument containing the tombs of Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon.
