📍 From Calle Buen Rostro, Spain
Granada Cathedral stands in the historic city centre beside the Royal Chapel, where the Catholic Monarchs, Isabella and Ferdinand, are buried. Dedicated to Our Lady of the Incarnation, it was built on the site of the city’s main mosque, marking the transformation of Granada after the Christian conquest of 1492. Construction began in 1523 with a Gothic scheme, later reshaped by Diego de Siloé into a major work of Spanish Renaissance architecture. Its monumental façade, designed by Alonso Cano, faces Plaza de las Pasiegas with three deeply recessed arches that give the stonework a strong rhythm of light and shadow. Inside, towering pale piers, gilded decoration and the circular main chapel create a very different sense of space: expansive, luminous and richly ceremonial. The adjoining Royal Chapel is a separate monument, rather than part of the cathedral interior.
