Catedral de Barcelona, formally the city’s main Gothic cathedral, stands in the heart of the Barri Gòtic where medieval streets converge. Its ornate Gothic façade, pinnacles and sculpted portals present a strongly vertical, symmetrical composition that reads well from the narrow avenues that frame it; at close range the carved stone, gargoyles and weathered textures reward tight details. Inside, a high vaulted nave and colored stained glass create layered shafts of light and deep shadow useful for chiaroscuro studies. The quiet cloister with its garden, pool and resident geese provides intimate compositional contrasts to the cathedral’s monumentality, and the cathedral roof yields panoramic views over the dense jumble of Gothic rooftops.
