Catalan Bay, also known as La Caleta, is a small seaside village and sandy bay on Gibraltar’s Mediterranean-facing eastern shore, beneath the steep limestone slopes of the Rock. Its fishing community has strong Genoese roots, adding an Italian strand to Gibraltar’s layered cultural history. Low, brightly painted houses cluster behind the beach, contrasting with the sheer scale and pale textures of the cliffs above. The Church of Our Lady of Sorrows is a focal point of the village, whose maritime identity remains central to its character. Views along the curving shoreline bring the beach, colorful façades, and towering Rock into one frame; the east-facing setting receives morning light rather than the sunset light of Gibraltar’s western waterfront.
