Castlepoint Lighthouse
📍 New Zealand
Castlepoint Lighthouse stands on a rocky reef at Castlepoint, on the Wairarapa coast of New Zealand’s North Island. First lit in 1913, the white tower remains an active navigational landmark overlooking the Pacific, a sheltered lagoon, and the distinctive limestone mass of Castle Rock. The wider area is known as Rangiwhakaoma, while the English name was given by James Cook after the rock formations reminded him of castle battlements. From the coastal track, the lighthouse’s crisp geometry contrasts with weathered cliffs, blue-green water, and waves breaking across the reef; sunrise and shifting coastal weather can transform the scene rapidly. The tower itself is not open to visitors, but the surrounding reserve and lighthouse viewpoint are accessible on foot.
