Built in the 17th century, the Castle of St John the Baptist (Castillo Negro) stands by the coast as one of Santa Cruz de Tenerife’s oldest military fortresses. Its pivotal role in defending the city from pirate attacks is commemorated each July during the reconstruction of Admiral Nelson’s failed raid of 1797. The fortress’s thick stone walls and circular tower provide a glimpse into the island’s colonial past, while the nearby Parque Marítimo César Manrique and the Auditorio de Tenerife add a modern contrast. Though the interior isn’t usually open to the public, visitors can explore the surrounding area, stroll along the waterfront, and admire impressive views of the Atlantic from this historical landmark.
