Built by the Moors on the 170-meter Olvido Hill, it was used to watch the Mediterranean Sea and consequently became one of the city's most strategic military garrisons. Inside the walls of the castle, you'll find a variety of different structures from different eras, from its original 9th-century Islamic fortress to its 18th-century Baroque buildings, that date from early Christian rule. Nowadays, the castle is open to the public and is a major tourist destination of the city, offering beautiful views of the city and of the Mediterranean coast. It is an important symbol of the city and a great place to discover the history of Alicante.
