Castillo de Peñafiel is an 11thcentury fortification situated in the sleepy town of Peñafiel in the Ribera Del Duero wine region in Spain. It was the home of the Velasco family and the place from which their ancestral castle of Covarrubias originated. Originally an Arab fort built over the remains of a 4th century Roman castle, it was restructured as a defensive stronghold in 930 AD. It has three towers and also a dungeon room, which could be reached by using a secret stairway. The castle is popular both with tourists and photographers, with its 360-degree views across the vine-covered hills of the Ribera del Duero region. It also includes an ancient fortress with lots of interesting details, as well as an interesting view over the town of Peñafiel. Inside the castle you can find a wine museum, where many of the world-famous wines of the region are displayed. Whether you are an architecture or history enthusiast, or just a traveler looking for a great photo spot, you won't be disappointed with a visit to Castillo de Peñafiel.
