Castillo de la Yedra
📍 Spain
Castillo de la Yedra is a hilltop fortress that dominates Cazorla and the upper Guadalquivir valley, an emblematic landmark for the gateway to the Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas Natural Park. Its importance lies in both strategic location and layered history: originally an Islamic fortification from the taifa/Almohad periods, it was reworked after the 13th-century Christian conquest into a medieval stronghold controlling routes and shepherding lands.

Architecturally the castle is adapted to the rock—irregular curtain walls, squared and circular towers, a prominent keep and narrow defensive passages follow the cliff’s contours. Materials combine rough fieldstone and ashlar reinforcements; visible modifications show Gothic-Mudéjar and later Renaissance repairs, giving a palimpsest of styles rather than a single coherent plan. Within, a steep access ramp leads to an inner patio, cistern traces and vaulted chambers converted over time for storage and administration. Today the site functions as a cultural focal point: some rooms house municipal exhibition spaces and interpretive panels about local history, and its esplanade is used for seasonal cultural events and concerts that exploit the dramatic setting. From the battlements there are panoramic views across the park’s serranía—a defining, singular aspect of visiting Castillo de la Yedra.
