The Castillo de Berlanga de Duero is one of Spain's history-rich fortresses. Strategically situated on the border between Ávila and Segovia, the castle was built by the Moors in the 8th century, and later conquered by the Christian kingdoms in 1041. The fortress was then greatly expanded by the first Duke of Berlanga at the end of the 15th century. The castle features a squarekeep, two circular towers, a wide tunnel with four arches, and a well in the middle courtyard. Today, the castle is open to the public and offers spectacular views of the nearby mountains. Visitors can walk around the walls to admire the original defensive structures and explore the ancient masony throughout the castle. Inside the keep, there is a modern folklore museum which showcases the history of the area and its traditions. Visitors can also learn about the ‘duel with swords’ held at the castle often in the Middle Ages. In addition, the castle grounds feature attractive landscaped gardens, a picnic area, and other outdoor activities.
