Castelo dos Mouros (or Moors' Castle) is a hilltop Portuguese castle, located in the municipality of Sintra in the hills of the Serra de Sintra. It was erected by the Moors in the 8th century and stretches over a mountainous area of 40 hectares. The castle is an iconic symbol of the town of Sintra and it remains an extensive ruin with many of its walls and towers still standing. It offers sweeping views of the beach and coastline of the Atlantic Ocean. It is one of the most visited attractions in Portugal, and there were more than two million visitors in 2018. The castle is open to the public, with guided tours and access to some parts of the grounds. Visitors can explore the ruins and also learn about the important historical events that have taken place at the castle. There is no admission fee, but donations are welcome.
