Located in Évora, Portugal, Castelo do Monsaraz is a late 13th century castle which stands atop a hill overlooking a large dam. In the castle, visitors can explore its ramparts, gateways and towers, as well as enjoy the stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The keep of the castle was built after the Reconquista, to protect the region from raids by the Moors. The castle also served as a refuge during the wars of the 15th century. Inside the castle are two limestone sculptures, representing the emperors of Portugal and Spain. There is also a chapel and a museum which displays archaeological artifacts found in the nearby area. All in all, the castle of Monsaraz is an excellent opportunity for a day trip; not only does it offer great views, but a chance to take in some of Portugal's oldest history.
