Castelo de Óbidos crowns the northern end of the walled town of Óbidos in western Portugal. Its crenellated towers and ramparts connect with the walls enclosing a dense cluster of whitewashed houses, narrow lanes and terracotta roofs. Expanded and altered through the Middle Ages, the fortress reflects the town’s strategic importance; Óbidos also formed part of the estates of Portugal’s queens for centuries. The former palace within the castle now houses a pousada, and its Manueline windows introduce elaborate carved stonework into the defensive architecture. The most distinctive views set the castle’s heavy masonry against the small-scale houses below, while the walls trace the hilltop above the surrounding agricultural countryside.
