Situated in the Tejo river, just about 30 km away from Lisbon, the Almourol castle is a magnificent mix of history, legends and romanticism. Built during the medieval period, this castle owes its architecture to daily life within the Order of the Knights Templar, who built the walls. It stands as a reminder of the Order's struggles and an ethereal representation of the period. Visitors of the castle can enjoy the magnificent view over the river and the confluence of the Zêzere and Tagus and the narrow passages around the towers and between the walls. Interesting to note, is that the castle was built by using the surrounding weather, making it fit perfectly with the environment. All around this castle, some of nature’s beauty can be appreciated, plenty of greenery and with the waves of the river close by.
