📍 From Tower, Italy
Castello Scaligero stands at the entrance to Sirmione’s historic center, on the narrow peninsula extending into the southern waters of Lake Garda. Built in the 13th century under the Scaliger rulers of Verona, it guarded the approach to the town and controlled access from the lake. Its water-filled moat and fortified dock make the relationship between fortress and lake especially clear: on the eastern side, defensive walls enclose a sheltered basin of water. Square towers, swallowtail battlements and a tall keep form the castle’s recognizable silhouette, contrasting with the tiled roofs of the town behind it. Views across the moat bring the pale masonry and its reflections into the same frame, while the lakeside walls reveal the scale of the enclosed dock.
