Castello San Giorgio di Lerici is a compact medieval fortress dramatically perched on a rocky promontory overlooking the Gulf of Poets. Its importance lies in both strategic maritime history and as a panoramic cultural site: it dominates Lerici’s harbor, frames views of palm-lined bays, and houses local museums and temporary art exhibitions that connect visitors with the town’s seafaring past.
Historically the site was fortified from the early Middle Ages; the core fortifications were expanded through the 12th–14th centuries amid rivalries between Pisa and Genoa and later held by the Doria family. These interventions explain the castle’s layered look—older masonry at the base with later crenellated walls. Architecturally it is compact rather than grand: stout curtain walls, a square keep, narrow embrasures for cannon and arquebus, and a small chapel/visitor rooms within the inner ward. The stone terraces and battlement walks offer uninterrupted views of Lerici, the Lerici–San Terenzo shoreline, and the islands. Uniquely, the castle hosts the Museo Civico (sections on local maritime life, archaeology and geology) and seasonal cultural programs—open-air concerts, temporary art exhibits, and historic reenactments—often timed to summer festivals. Access follows a short uphill path from the town; some interior spaces are small and rotated between displays, so exhibitions change with the season.
