📍 From Seaside, Italy
Castello Maniace is a 13th-century castle located in Siracusa, Italy. It was built for Emperor Frederick II who wanted a stronghold to protect the area from possible invasions. The castle stands on a large rocky promontory that offers a spectacular view over the waterfront of the historical city of Siracusa. Today, it stands as a symbol of the city. The exterior walls are made from huge blocks of limestone adorned with battlements and circular turrets. The castle also has two gates, the Porta Aurea and the Porta Marina. Inside, visitors can see a drawbridge, siege tunnel, arched loggia, and a huge cistern. Within the castle, there is a small museum that displays an array of artistic and historical items. At the entrance, you will find an ancient coat of arms showing a bird with a snake in its beak. Castello Maniace is an interesting and very photogenic destination and is definitely worth exploring while visiting Siracusa.
