Castello di Gallipoli is a castle and fortification located in the historic Italian town of Gallipoli. It was first constructed in the 13th century and served as the main defence mechanism of the town until the 16th century. The entire castle is now a listed national monument, with guided tours around the castle’s walls, where visitors can learn about its history and marvel at its architecture. Castello di Gallipoli was built to protect the Mar Piccolo and the Port of Gallipoli, and overlooks the Ionian Sea and Strait of Otranto. From here, visitors can take in the spectacular views of the town and the surrounding coastline. Inside the castle walls, one can visit the Church of Santa Caterina, originally built in the 15th century and now restored to its former glory. There are also several cannons situated around the castle, standing as a reminder of the castle's prominent role in defending the town. Castello di Gallipoli provides a unique insight into the flourishing seaside town of Gallipoli and stands as an extraordinary example of Italian fortification over the centuries.
