The stunning Château de Chantilly sits majestically in the town of the same name, north of Paris, and commands visitors' attention almost immediately. Built in the 16th century for Anne de Montmorency, it is the largest French château after the royal residence at Versailles. Home to Count Henri d'Orleans, the estate is filled with art and treasures from the 19th and 20th centuries. As a tourist, you can explore its delightful grounds, which boast a beautiful lake, surrounding woodland and orchards. Inside the château, there are several jaw-dropping but restored decorations, including engravings, frescoes and furnishings in the style of the Ancien Régime. The Grand Apartments, built for the Duc d'Aumale in the 18th century, make for a perfect end to your visit. As a photography buff, you can capture the stunning facade of the château or shoot a long exposure of its reflection in the lake. Discover the charming pockets of the estate and take a few snapshots of its impressive sculptures and Mediterranean-style garden.
