Castell de Tamarit is a medieval fortified ensemble on a rocky Mediterranean headland east of Tarragona, beside Cala Jovera and near the mouth of the Gaià River. Its walls, towers and Romanesque church preserve the compact outline of a former walled settlement, reflecting the strategic importance of this coast during the Middle Ages. From the beach, the pale stone complex rises directly above the water, creating its most recognizable view: battlements and tiled roofs framed by blue sea, sand and coastal pines. The interior is privately managed, so the castle is generally appreciated from the surrounding shoreline and coastal paths.
