Castell de Tamarit is a fortified medieval complex on a rocky headland above Cala Jovera, near the mouth of the Gaià River and just east of Tarragona. Once the center of the medieval lordship of Tamarit, the ensemble combines crenellated walls, towers and the Romanesque church of Santa Maria, creating the appearance of a compact walled village above the Mediterranean. Its pale stone, dark cypress and pine trees, and sharp silhouette against the sea are especially recognizable from the beach and nearby coastal path, where the headland emphasizes the scale of the defenses. The castle is privately managed and often used for events, so interior access is limited; the clearest public views are from the surrounding coast.
