Castel Sant'Angelo is a stunning tourist destination in Rome, Italy. Built in 139 AD by Emperor Hadrian as a mausoleum for himself and his family, Castel Sant'Angelo has a long, tumultuous history. In the Middle Ages, it was a stronghold for the popes, who transformed it into a fortress. It has served various purposes throughout the centuries, including a prison and a military hospital. Today, it is a museum and a gorgeous example of Roman architecture. Visitors can explore the beautiful inner courtyards, stroll across its majestic bridge, and admire its round drum-like shape. It has many terraces and towers with breathtaking views over the Tiber and Rome, making it an ideal place for sightseeing. Furthermore, there are exquisite works of art to be found inside the two-story building, comprising of papal apartments, hallways, and courtyards. The museum features an impressive collection of statues, paintings, and sculptures. Make sure not to miss out on the ancient weapons displayed on the Rampa di Leone staircase.
