The Castel Sant'Angelo is a fascinating and majestic monument located in Rome, Italy. Constructed in the 2nd century as a mausoleum for the Emperor Hadrian and his family, it served as a papal fortress, prison, and armoury until 1901. Overlooking the Tiber River and acting as a gateway to St Peter's Basilica, the castle is now open to the public and is home to an extensive art collection, which includes Renaissance masterpieces. Visitors to the castle can explore the terraces, bastions, and passageways, while the secret underground passageway beneath the castle links it to St Peter's Basilica. The cannon battery on the roof provides stunning views of the city, while above the grand entrance, two marble angels flank the statue of the Archangel Michael. This is one of Rome's best attractions and provides a captivating journey through more than two thousand years of history.
