Cascadas de Agua Azul is a chain of waterfalls and turquoise pools on the Xanil River in northern Chiapas, near the community of Agua Azul and along the route between Ocosingo and Palenque. Mineral-rich water flows over broad limestone steps, creating white curtains, rounded terraces and calm basins framed by dense tropical vegetation. The recognizable blue-green color is clearest during drier periods; heavy seasonal rain can carry sediment that turns the river brown. Paths and viewpoints reveal different layers of the cascades, from close textures of rushing water to wider compositions of bright pools against the forest. Swimming is limited to designated areas, as currents around the falls can be powerful.
