The overwater houses of Bocas del Toro are a defining feature of Panama’s Caribbean archipelago, especially around Isla Colón and nearby inhabited islands. Raised on timber stilts above sheltered lagoons and channels, they reflect a practical response to tides, heavy rainfall, limited shoreline space, and everyday travel by boat. Their wooden walls, corrugated roofs, narrow docks, and brightly painted façades belong to the region’s Caribbean vernacular landscape. Seen from the water, the houses form layered scenes of color, reflections, moored boats, and mangrove-lined shores. Many are private homes or small businesses, so they are best photographed from public waterfronts or boats without entering docks or residential spaces.
