Casas de Campeche refers to the traditional houses that shape the historic center of San Francisco de Campeche, the fortified colonial port on Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. Their low profiles, tall wooden doors, wrought-iron details and stucco façades painted in contrasting tropical colors create the city’s characteristic streetscape. Closely spaced along straight blocks, the homes form strong lines of perspective, while weathered walls and shifting patches of sun reveal their texture. Many are arranged around interior courtyards, an architectural response to privacy and the region’s warm climate.
