Casa Gallardo is an early-20th-century residential building at the corner of Calle de Ferraz and Plaza de España, near Madrid’s Cerralbo Museum. Completed in 1914 to designs by Federico Arias Rey, it is a distinctive example of Madrid’s Modernismo, the Spanish expression of Art Nouveau. Its pale façade is densely worked with floral ornament, flowing window surrounds and wrought-iron balconies, while a rounded corner tower and dark, elaborate roofline give it a recognizable silhouette. The contrast between the sculpted walls and slate roofing is especially striking from across the junction, where the building’s two street façades can be seen together. Closer views reveal how the decoration frames individual windows and balconies, turning an urban apartment building into a richly textured architectural subject.
