Casa de las Columnas stands within Tulum’s walled Maya ruins on Mexico’s Caribbean coast. Its surviving stone columns mark a broad entrance to a building that was once roofed, giving a sense of the enclosed spaces that existed in this coastal city. The low walls, weathered limestone and rhythm of the pillars set it apart from Tulum’s taller temples: here, the interest lies in the scale and shape of an everyday built space, not a dramatic skyline.
