Cartoixa d’Escaladei is the first Carthusian monastery in the Iberian Peninsula, founded in the 12th century. Tucked at the foot of the Montsant mountain range, its partly restored remains offer a glimpse into an austere monastic life. Visitors can wander through cloisters, contemplate the silent cells, and admire the serene courtyards where Carthusian monks once sought spiritual enlightenment. Informative panels and a small museum shed light on the site’s heritage and the area's deep wine-growing roots. The surrounding Priorat region enchants with rugged trails, panoramic viewpoints, and local wineries, promising a captivating cultural experience.
