Cartagena de Indias is a historic Caribbean port on Colombia’s northern coast, centered on a fortified old city shaped by Spanish colonial rule and centuries of maritime trade. Founded in 1533, it became a strategic gateway between the Caribbean and the interior, leaving a legacy of massive stone ramparts, bastions, churches, plazas, and the nearby Castillo San Felipe de Barajas. Within the walls, brightly painted façades, carved wooden doors, shaded courtyards, and flower-draped balconies give the narrow streets their distinctive texture, while Getsemaní adds murals and lively neighborhood scenes. From the fortifications, photographs can combine weathered limestone, domes and tiled roofs with the modern high-rises of Bocagrande across the water, making the contrast between colonial and contemporary Cartagena especially clear.
