📍 From Castillo de Cardona, Spain
Cardona is a compact medieval town in Catalonia, northwest of Barcelona, built around a fortified hill that dominates the surrounding plain of the Cardener river. Its skyline is defined by the stone bulk of the Castle of Cardona and the squat Romanesque mass of the Collegiate Church of Sant Vicenç, visible from approach roads and offering strong vertical silhouettes against the sky. Adjacent to the town the Muntanya de Sal exposes layered halite outcrops—pale, almost sculpted terraces of salt that contrast sharply with the darker limestone and the ochres of the village roofs. Photographically, the juxtaposition of the fortress’s textured masonry and the white salt cliffs, plus the play of late-afternoon light across towers and terraces, gives a striking study in scale, material and color. Parts of the castle complex now serve public functions.
