Capela dos Ossos de Faro
📍 Portugal
The Capela dos Ossos de Faro in Faro, Portugal, is located near the main entrance of the Igreja do Carmo church. It is a unique chapel made of human bones, built in the 18th century to commemorate those who died in the plague of 1755. The walls, columns, and ceiling of the chapel are decorated with skulls, femurs, and other human bones. Visitors can learn a bit of Faro’s history while standing in the somberly decorated chapel. A sign near the entrance states that it was made to remind all of their own mortality. Entrance to the chapel is free.
