Cape Spear Lighthouse
📍 From Blackhead Road, Canada
The iconic Cape Spear Lighthouse stands proudly at the most easterly point of North America, in the town of St John’s, Canada. Built in 1836 by the British to protect ships from the treacherous rocks along the coast, the lighthouse was originally powered by gas lamps. Over its extensive history, the lighthouse’s difficulty in reaching has been a challenge, as the original access to it was only by boat or dangerous climb. Nowadays, it can be reached from the town by a short 20-minute drive. Visitors can explore some of the oldest surviving buildings in the region, take in the stunning views and find out about the brave people who used the Cape Spear lighthouse to protect sailors over the past two centuries. Visiting the lighthouse and taking photos is a must for anyone interested in history and stories of the sea.
