Cape Farewell is the rugged headland at the northern extremity of the South Island near Pūponga, forming the rocky western flank of Golden Bay as the Tasman Sea meets Cook Strait. The exposed promontory is visually striking for its wind-sculpted tussock, layered coastal bedrock and abrupt cliffs that fall to wave-cut platforms, giving strong horizontal strata and texture that read well in landscape frames. Wide, panoramic views emphasize scale: the low-lying land behind Pūponga, the sweep of Golden Bay and the open sea horizon create negative space that isolates the cape’s silhouette. Light changes quickly here and weather produces dramatic skies; photographers often use the sweeping foreground grasses and rock lines to lead the eye. The headland is reached from Pūponga by road with only a short walk to the shoreline.
