Cannon Street
📍 United Kingdom
Cannon Street runs through the City of London from St Paul’s Churchyard towards King William Street and the Monument to the Great Fire. Its name derives from the medieval candle-making trade rather than artillery, preserving a trace of the working city beneath today’s financial district. Opposite Cannon Street railway station, the London Stone—a limestone block with longstanding symbolic ties to the City—is displayed behind a protective grille at 111 Cannon Street; its original purpose remains unknown. Westward views along the street draw the eye towards the dome of St Paul’s Cathedral, framed by commercial buildings. Office workers and railway commuters animate the pavements, placing these historic landmarks within the everyday life of London’s financial centre.
