The Canal Grande, or Grand Canal, is Venice’s main waterway, tracing a reverse S through the historic city from near Santa Lucia railway station to the Bacino di San Marco. Its banks are lined with palazzi built by wealthy Venetian families, their façades displaying Byzantine-influenced ornament, Gothic tracery and Renaissance symmetry. Entrances opening directly onto the water reveal how boats shaped both commerce and domestic life. Gondolas, vaporetti and delivery boats share the channel, keeping it a working artery rather than simply a scenic backdrop. The stone arch of the Rialto Bridge marks one of its most recognizable stretches, while the domes of Santa Maria della Salute rise beside its southern mouth. Reflections break the ochre, pink and white façades into shifting bands, and views along the bends layer palace fronts, mooring poles and passing vessels.
