Canal du Rhône au Rhin is an artificial 84-mile canal in France that links the Rhône River to the Rhine. Constructed between 1820 and 1843, this canal is dotted with locks, dams and bridges that can be explored by a hike or bike, or leisurely sailed and gently paddled within an hour’s drive from Strasbourg. The bike route along the canal includes magnificent views of tree-studded hillsides, lush meadows and riparian areas. The visitors can experience the countryside, as well as running and fishing on some of the side canals. Nature lovers will find wildflowers and migratory birds, along with quaint villages and numerous bridges to explore. In the Gerstheim area, a 90-foot stone dam provides stunning scenery, with a nearby chapel providing an atmospheric backdrop. The canal amenity provides the best opportunity to explore the local landscape on foot or on two wheels.
