Cagliari, Sardinia’s capital, rises on hills above the Gulf of Cagliari on the island’s southern coast. Its historic core is the fortified Castello quarter, a maze of pale limestone lanes, stairways and bastions crowned by the Cathedral of Santa Maria and the medieval towers of San Pancrazio and the Elephant. Phoenician, Punic, Roman, Pisan, Aragonese and Savoy rule all left traces in the city, from the Roman amphitheatre to layered churches and defensive walls. Terraces near the Bastione di Saint Remy reveal one of Cagliari’s defining scenes: warm stone descending toward the harbor, with rooftops, domes and the gulf spread below. Beyond the center, Poetto beach forms a long coastal edge, while the neighboring Molentargius wetlands are known for their flamingos, creating a striking meeting of urban skyline, saltwater and birdlife.
