📍 From Courtyard, Japan
Byodoin is one of Japan’s most iconic temples, recognized for its Phoenix Hall, which features a gracefully symmetrical design reminiscent of a mythical bird’s wings. Built in 1052 during the Heian Period, its architecture and exquisite gardens reflect aristocratic splendor. The temple was once a countryside villa, later converted into a Buddhist temple by Fujiwara no Yorimichi. Today, Byodoin forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage "Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto" and is featured on Japan’s 10 yen coin. Explore the serene atmosphere, stroll along the reflecting pond, and admire the original wooden statue of Amida Buddha. Be sure to visit the onsite museum housing treasures like well-preserved phoenix statues. Families and history enthusiasts can appreciate the site’s fascinating heritage, making it a highlight for any visit to Uji.
